Our history

Monash Caulfield Child Care Centre was founded in 1975 as the Group Care Centre of the Caulfield Institute of Technology (CIT). The CIT campus had been established as the Caulfield Technical School in 1922 and is now the Caulfield campus of Monash University. The Group Care Centre was located in a red brick house at 882 Dandenong Road, just to the west of the CIT campus, which CIT had purchased in late 1974 to use as the premises for the child care.

The Group Care Centre began as a pilot program in 1975, in response to a need expressed by CIT staff and students for child care services at the Caulfield campus, and became a permanent operation the following year. From its inception, the Centre had care provided by on-site professional educators and support staff and with management by a committee of parent volunteers.

The Group Care Centre welcomed children of CIT staff and students as well as other members of the local community. It was part of the Counselling Services of CIT, which also began organising family day care a short time later. As today, the Group Care Centre hosted children aged 0-5 and provided meals prepared on-site. Through the end of the 1970s, the Centre grew in popularity and increased its hours and staff.

In 1982, CIT merged with the State College of Victoria at Frankston to become the Chisholm Institute of Technology, with campuses in Caulfield and Frankston. The child care centre continued operating at 882 Dandenong Road, as the Chisholm Child Care Centre. The campus expanded through the 1980s and the Child Care Centre became part of a services precinct in its north-west.

Chisholm Institute of Technology was merged into Monash University in 1990, at which point the child care centre adopted its current name. The Monash era brought further growth to the Caulfield campus, including the construction of the 10-storey H Building and multi-level carpark on a site that included our premises on Dandenong Road. Thus we relocated, in July 2003, to our current location on Derby Road. The new premises were larger and allowed the Centre to expand from 30 to 50 places.

Our recent history has seen renovations to the Centre, with expanded indoor space and a reconstruction of the structures in our outdoor area. While the neighbourhood evolves around us, our site on Derby Road remains a comfortable haven for our children. We have created many traditions over the years that we continue today, including picnics, an annual art exhibition, and an end-of-year concert. We are proud of our Centre and excited for what the future will bring!
